
The number of homeless people around the world has increased by about 10% in one year and their number has reached more than 120 million.
According to a report released by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the number of displaced people will increase by 8 percent in 2023 due to ongoing conflicts in Sudan, Myanmar, Ukraine and Gaza.
The organization’s annual report stated that the number of homeless people has increased for the 12th consecutive year and by the end of 2023, the number will reach 11.73 million.
Since January this year, more than 100,000 people have been forced to leave their homes and according to the organization’s estimates, the number of homeless people has increased to more than 120 million.
The largest number of people were displaced in Sudan, where more than 7 million people were forced to flee their homes due to armed conflict.
Of these, 6 million remain within Sudan, while 1.6 million have arrived in neighboring countries.
According to an estimate, 1.7 million people have been displaced in Gaza, but the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees is caring for more than 600,000 people, so this count has not been revised.
The report stated that 73 percent of the displaced people belong to 5 countries namely Afghanistan, Syria, Venezuela, Ukraine and Sudan.
Filippo Grandi, head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, has requested the international community to take immediate steps in this regard.
He said that the difficult year of 2023 was made worse by the insufficient budget of the institution.
He said that international political interests get involved in the political solution of conflicts.
He criticized the United Nations Security Council and said that it is not playing a role in establishing peace.
Anti-immigration sentiment is on the rise in Europe, the report said, while the number of people seeking political asylum worldwide rose by 40 percent in one year.
